rgest Halloween celebration that traditionally welcomes nearly half a million people. This free celebration is one filled with parades, concerts, dancing, drinking and outlandish costumes. The 23rd annual West Hollywood Costume Carnaval will once again take place along the stretch of Santa Monica Blvd. this October 31st.

This extravagant event began in 1987; three years after the City of West Hollywood officially became a City within the County of Los Angeles. The Carnaval, which began as a primarily gay and lesbian event, progressed throughout most of the 90′s with large numbers, but the event experienced extreme growth in 2001, reaching 350,000 people from all different walks of life. The West Hollywood Halloween Carnaval is the Los Angeles area’s second largest event, second only to the Tournament of Roses New Year’s Day Parade. To give some perspective on the size of the event, the Los Angeles Coliseum Holds 120,000 people, only 24% of the Carnaval’s expected turn-out.

The event takes place between La Cienega Blvd. and La Peer Drive on Santa Monica Boulevard – “Route 66” – and will begin with a traditional halloween parade to kick off the evening starting at La Cienega & Santa Monica Boulevard. Because 2010 is the 35th anniversary of The Rocky Horror Picture Show, the parade will include members of the Rocky Horror Picture Show cast, stage performers and city officials being transported in pedi‐floats down Santa Monica Blvd. The Carnaval will also be devoting one of the 6 stages of the event to performances honoring this legendary cult film which will run throughout the night. The entire event will close out with a Guinness Book record-breaking performance of Time Warp synchronized across all six stages of the event.

Speaking of the other stages at the event, another main stage – Club 25 – will feature house band Tranzkontinental, the Wandering Marionettes, aerialists The Birds and a rock & roll strip show. In addition to the two main stages, four smaller stages will feature DJs, graffiti artists, voguers and go-go dancers. But if the parade, shows and dancing are not really what you’re into, you will also find that the people who attend this event arrive in bizarre and outrageous costumes. So put together your best costume and head on out!

The Carnaval takes place from 6PM to 11pm on Sunday, October 31st, 2010. Parking is a bit tricky, since there will be over 500,000 people traveling to one location. So take a shuttle or car pool and check out these parking locations that are recommended by the carnaval organizers.
